Definition: (al-EN-drone-ate SO-dee-um) A drug that affects bone metabolism. It is used in treating osteoporosis and in treating and reducing the risk of bone pain caused by cancer.

Alendronate sodium belongs to the family of drugs called bisphosphonates. It is the active ingredient in Fosamax.
