How A Primer on Prostate Cancer Evolved
by Donna Pogliano
My partner's diagnosis in October, 1999, started my research into prostate
cancer. Soon, I became confident enough to counsel others and point them to
resources, as did other people who subscribed to the prostate cancer email
discussion lists.
In March, 2000, I started a project to put all the best information we were
repeating over and over again into one concise document. I drafted it in
June, 2000 and sent it to other educated patients for review. It was ready
in September, 2000, after Dr. Stephen Strum checked it for accuracy. Robert
Young put it on the Web at Phoenix5 for all to see and use.
But so many men diagnosed with prostate cancer are not computer literate and
we wanted a way to reach them as well. Dr. Stephen Strum, a world-renowned
medical oncologist, volunteered to review the document, thus beginning two
years of collaboration in the writing of the book.
Finally, in late
September, 2002, the 368-page book version, called A Primer on Prostate
Cancer, The Empowered Patient's Guide was published. It is a full-color,
fully indexed and referenced book with a glossary, a resource list and
several other appendices. For more information on the book version of the
Primer, click on www.lefprostate.org.
