Definition: (STAIR-oyds) Complex hormones that effect the development and growth of sex organs, amongst other roles. Testosterone is a natural steroid. Synthetic steroids (such as the corticosteroid prednisone and hydrocortisone) are used to relieve swelling and inflammation. They are also used in conjunction with high (and low) dose ketoconazole treatment.
