finasteride
Definition: (fin-AS-tur-eyed) A 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor used in hormone therapy to stop the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Developed by Merck and sold under the brand name Proscar, it is also the active ingredient in Propecia (made by Merck), for hair loss. The use of Propecia can effect PSA readings.
