cavernous nerves

Synonyms: corpus (or corpora) cavernosa nerves

Definition: (KAV-ver-nuss) anatomical drawing, cross-section of the penis The nerves that produce natural erections. (See top of drawing.)

Enroute to the corpora cavernosa in the penis, they cross and are attached to the surface of the prostate gland. In the nerve-sparing prostatectomy, the surgeon must peel them from the prostate to spare them.
