The Cavernous Nerves
the object of a nerve-sparing prostatectomy

drawing showing location of the cavernous nerves that control erections This is a simple drawing to show the location of the cavernous (corpora cavernosa) nerves that control erections and the difficulty faced with a nerve-sparing prostatectomy.

On the way to the penis, the nerves pass across and adhere fully to the prostate gland. Lifting them from the gland has been compared to peeling a wet tissue, undamaged, from a surface, which is why the skill of the surgeon is crucial. Even if successful, the nerves can still suffer "trauma" that may require additional time for recovery.

Dr. Patrick Walsh's book has line drawings to show the procedure he uses.
