prostatism

Definition: drawing showing the location of the prostate gland (PRAH-stah-TIZ-um) A symptom resulting from compression or obstruction of the urethra, due most commonly to benign prostatic hyperplasia of the prostate gland. It results in urination difficulties and, occasionally, urine retention.

The diagram shows how the urethra passes through the prostate, and how any swelling of the prostate can effect urination.

The symptom my also stem from prostatitis, prostate cancer, or any condition that enlarges the prostate gland.
