flare

Definition: A sudden reaction to starting hormone therapy, often characterized by severe increase in pre-hormone therapy symptoms, such as pain. This is because some drugs can initially stimulate the production of testosterone which, many say, can stimulate the growth of the prostate cancer. Some report flare may be prevented by taking an antiandrogen (e.g., Casodex) before starting hormone therapy.
