cancer
Definition:
(KAN-sir) A term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide (mitosis) without control. Cancer cells can invade nearby tissues and spread through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to other parts of the body (metastasis) . Cancer cells also avoid natural cell death (apoptosis).
The word originated from the Latin word for crab, because the swollen veins around a surface tumor appeared like the legs of a crab.
