Definition: (biss-FOSS-fone-ates) Sometimes misspelled as biOphosphonates, they are a family of drugs used to treat osteoporosis and the bone pain caused by some types of cancer. They slow bone loss (osteoporosis) by inhibiting the osteoclast (bone) cells.

Aredia and Fosamax are two drugs that use bisphosphonates.
