seeding

Synonyms: seed implatation (SI), brachytherapy

Definition: The placement of radioactive seeds or pellets (capsules) which emit low energy radiation, directly into the prostate gland, in order to kill the prostate cancer cells. See radioisotopes, high dose rate (HDR).

These are OncoseedsTM, made by Nycomed-Amersham. This is no endorsement and there are other brands. These are used just to show comparative size as good photos are difficult to come by. (Shown is a US dime. The seeds are 4.5 mm long, smaller than a grain of rice.)

photo of actual seeds next to a dime for comparison; they are about the shape of but smaller than a grain of rice

To see the internal structure of this and several other types of seeds, go to the MD Anderson site.
