Definition: illustration of a PET scan An image of structures inside the body or the act of producing images. Scans often used in diagnosing, staging, and monitoring disease includes bone scans, CAT scans, PET scans and MRIs.

Radioactive substances are injected into the bloodstream and collect in targeted areas. A scanner that detects the radiation is used to create images (imaging).
